Please!

Have just sorted out a storage unit for dd (25mo) toys and told her firmly she has to put them away before taking out new ones. Seems to be working for now (threatened to bin them otherwise!) but perhaps the novelty will wear thin soon...

Put music on, set times for two mins . The tidy up song is perfect.

Bribe with the promise of something else more exciting. I say "Ds, if you help mummy tidy this away you can get x out". Or if we're planning on doing something anyway that I know ds likes I say "Ds, do you want to see your cousin?" And when he says yes I say, "ok, then help me do this first and we can go and see her!" Honestly, bribery always works with him and i'm not ashamed of it!

Like givemeaclue's idea.

Make it a game, pick up by colour - "Where's all the red things - clever girl! Can you show me the blue ones - good girl!"

Toy storage with pictures of what goes inside each box for pre-readers.
Tidying up together to start with: eg you put the trains away and I'll put the track away.
Loads of praise when they do tidy up, to the point where you feel a bit ridiculous.
