Beauty round-up

Caroline Hirons

Welcome one and all to the first of our beauty round-ups of 2013!

Last time we looked at miracle products to save our skin from the winter bluster – this time we let you decide the topic (you lucky things!) and you didn't disappoint, providing us with a veritable treasure trove of new beauty resolutions, products and trends. Thank you very much for all your contributions. Here's a round-up of your hottest tips...

It's the little things that count

DetoxWhen we asked for new year's beauty tips, detoxes were – unsurprisingly – high on the agenda. And cleansing your body needn't cost a penny as London Beauty Queen reminds us with her tips for DIY detox. Hurrah! She suggests that it's the little adjustments that determine if we will really stick to a detox plan – getting in the zone mentally, banishing naughty foods from our fridge and getting our friends on board "like your own personal cheerleading troop"...

Meanwhile Minimum the Bare used her maternity leave to detox her handbag (yes you heard right!) - "I wanted to feel like I was actually in control of something in my life. It clearly wasn't going to be my baby, so I thought my handbag would be a great start". She recommends sorting all your bits and bobs in to categories so you've always got everything you need close to hand. She invested in a Scaramanga flight bag complete with multiple compartments to stash her stuff in; full marks for organisation!

CC me in

CC creamThe new year has also brought with it a host of new products. Just as we were starting to get to grips with BB cream, Write on Mum tells us that "it's time for those baby BB creams to move on over and allow the new and improved, darling of the dream cream team take centre stage – CC cream!". CC is said to offer "more skin nourishing benefits than a BB, as well as more coverage and a higher SPF". Sounds good – and with L'Oreal making a version that retails for under a tenner, getting in on the action needn't break the bank.

A slick of oil

Along with BB cream, oil-based products were one of the biggest beauty break-throughs of last year. Bright Town Girl cites oils as a must-have for skincare – "my skin can not get enough and I am really seeing the benefits of using them on my face." For make-up removal she recommends Mac Cleanse off oil whilst for a real skin treat she uses Antipodes Divine Facial Oil - "this sinks into the skin well and I always wake with gorgeous glowing skin". For a penny-saver she recommends Boots' own Botanics Facial Oil which can be yours for under a tenner.

Facial oilsAnd then from oil to water – no not the stuff that comes from the tap – but heretofore high-end cleansing product Micellar water. Daily Polish recommends Superdrug's own B Pure version - "If you are really interested in Micellar waters then this is the one for you. It's high quality and really does remove makeup and grime and leave your face softer than when you began". Meanwhile London Beauty Queen – fresh from giving us her DIY detox tips – recommends her skincare essentials for "rejuvenated and hydrated" skin on-the-go. She swears by the Moisture Surge overnight mask from Clinique - "Some overnight masks can be too heavy on my skin, causing breakouts or leaving my pores feeling clogged, but this gives me bright and plumped skin that's super smooth". Sticking with Clinique, she also recommends the Skintone Correcting Lotion from their Even Better range which she says "creates a flawless base from which to work".

Colour crushes

Lip colours

Now we've got our minds, handbags and skin ready – it's time to add a dash of colour! Dubai-basedmake-up artist Victoria Loves Beauty informs us that 'Popsicle' is THE colour trend for 2013 – think "super-bright fluoro". For lips she suggests a tangerine orange hue such as Mac's lipstick in Morange – but warns "this super bright colour is not for the shy". Fluorescent pink is another statement colour - she recommends Illamasqua lipstick in Immodest, but again it's not one for the, er, modest. For those who want to rock the fluoro trend in a slightly more low-key manner, Victoria suggests a coral - "an easy colour to wear and goes with most skin tones". She recommends Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte Shine in Coral Incandescent.

Butter nail varnish Keeping things bright, Madames Made Up tries out two of Butter's new nail varnish shades, a candied mauve Molly-Coddled and a sugary sweet pink Fruit Machine - "perfect pastels that will brighten up your nails for this coming Spring". Now we just need the weather to brighten up to match...

For eyes, Simply the best in beauty recommends deep charcoals "the perfect shade to take you from Winter to Spring without feeling inappropriately pastel", combined with a "kick ass" lip colour (see above!). She recommends Burberry Complete Eye Palette - Smokey Grey for a selection of "minimalist and chic" shades, and Mac's Powerpoint Pencil for "great delicately smokey definition."
