Why would you do this? It's hard enough to get a rape conviction without people like this making a mockery of the system.

Writehand Wed 27-Feb-13 14:16:17

Surprise she's been jailed. Seems totally inappropriate. She's mentally ill & prison's not gonna fix that.

SirEdmundFrillary Wed 27-Feb-13 14:17:49

Surely she's ill and needs help?

slhilly Wed 27-Feb-13 14:24:37

I agree, why would you do this? Why would you prosecute and jail a mentally ill woman who "had had a disturbed childhood and had been in care" instead of treating her, when many women are too frightened to go to court over their quite real and terrible rapes, because they may not be believed?

SirEdmundFrillary Wed 27-Feb-13 14:41:21

Quite, slhilly.

somepeople2013 Wed 27-Feb-13 14:50:17

I had the misfortune to go to school with this woman (same year) and am definitely not surprised from what she was like at school. Disgusting individual.

xxDebstarxx Wed 27-Feb-13 16:32:43

Is she mentally ill? Surely not everyone who has done cruel and nasty things are mentally ill? Some people are just cruel and nasty with no reason behind it.

thezebrawearspurple Wed 27-Feb-13 23:16:57

xxDebstarxx; no evidence was provided to the court to indicate mental illness (which it would if she were, defence lawyers will jump on anything that can be used as an excuse) but this is mumsnet where all women are innocent little victims oppressed by the evil patriarchy. No crime committed by a woman can ever be recognised as such, women are viewed in the same way as little children, they can't be expected to be held responsible for their actions. No matter how vile their actions, they are always excused as mentally ill, misguided or driven to it by patriarchy (surprised nobody has turned up with that one yet).

This woman deserves prison, if they had sent her away many innocent men ago, she wouldn't have been able to rack up 11 victims (and their families who also suffer). She has been doing this for years because she has always gotten away with it and been indulged in her selfish attention seeking.

ripsishere Thu 28-Feb-13 03:29:23

I'm not quite sure that your description of a MNer is accurate the zebra. I certainly don't recognize myself.
Back to the woman in question. She is clearly disturbed, but I don't think prison is the whole answer.

DolomitesDonkey Thu 28-Feb-13 06:37:03

I expect she exhibits classic symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder which is a manifestation of childhood PTSD.

To the person who said she was vile at school, I expect she was - but it's a bit harsh - she's clearly had a quite horrid life.

She'll be in the papers in a few more years anyway.

kimorama Thu 28-Feb-13 11:40:04

Prison is pointless in such a case. She needs treatment

OldLadyKnowsNothing Thu 28-Feb-13 13:39:37

Prison is fairly pointless in most cases. Most prisoners could do with treatment of one sort or another, most don't get it. Don't see that there's any difference in this case.

BMW6 Thu 28-Feb-13 19:54:01

If this womans behaviour can be excused as "she is surely disturbed", then rapists themselves can surely claim the same compassion?
Most men do not commit rape, therefore surely something traumatic happened in their childhood to cause this behaviour and prison is no place for them?????
hmm

McBalls Thu 28-Feb-13 20:29:06

I don't doubt this woman has had experiences in life that have badly affected her and these false accusations are the result of that, also I doubt prison is the answer but what, or who, is prison the answer for?

I think some things in life are worthy of punishment, and as far as I'm concerned that is all prison is good for. I'm alright with that. Separate rehabilitation would be even better but alongside, not instead.

Rapist, domestic abuser, drug dealer, burglar, arsonist, drink-driver, they all will have ended up where they are due to past experiences to some extent or another. Quite often some kind of MH issue will be present. I'd like them to be rehabilitated, I'd also like them to be punished.

I don't feel any different about this woman and what she's done. She deserves to be punishment, her victims also deserve her to be punished.

It's galling though the amount of vitriol this RARE sort of case attracts. High-fives all round for the rape apologists hmm

TheSeniorWrangler Thu 28-Feb-13 20:32:46

she deserves to go to prison, the lives she's affected with her actions go beyond the 11 people she accused.

All i can say, is god forbid if she ever does get raped because she will have a hard time getting justice for herself.

tiredemma Thu 28-Feb-13 20:40:10

Does she have a mental illness/ disorder? Where is this info in the report?

BMW6 Thu 28-Feb-13 20:57:24

I believe that women who do this should get the same sentence as a rapist.

And no more excuses for her. Please.

Solopower1 Sun 03-Mar-13 13:59:59

But how can a 13-year-old make a false allegation of rape if sexual intercourse has taken place?

Clearly a very disturbed individual, who has had a horrible life. Prison is absolutely not the best place for her. What will that achieve?

I feel sorry for any man who has a woman accuse him falsely of raping her, and it is totally unfair that he had to go through that. But prison is unlikely to stop her doing it again to someone else, imo, whereas if she received proper psychiatric care and attention, it might.

amillionyears Sun 03-Mar-13 14:07:03

She is clearly very ill.

bangwhizz Mon 04-Mar-13 13:35:41

Most people in jail are mentally ill though.

bangwhizz Mon 04-Mar-13 13:37:59

The article says she has made 10 false allegations, and the latest one was to get back at aboyfriend she had arged with.

bangwhizz Mon 04-Mar-13 13:39:40

'But how can a 13-year-old make a false allegation of rape if sexual intercourse has taken place?'
I might be wrong but I think, that only sex with under 13s is classed as rape. Consensual sex with older children is sex with a minor.

seaofyou Mon 04-Mar-13 22:29:20

She was in sound mind when she made this up according to that article. She said it was because she didnt like him...their is no delusional symptoms in that! No Mental Illness!

If she does have a Mental Disorder like Boarderline Personality Disorder, if this is the case prison is the best place also because of the forensic psychiatry will treat her and help rehabilitate/monitor her to return to society.

She not only has caused a back step for real victims of rape but for people with Mental Illnesses too, who really are ill!

Solopower1 Tue 05-Mar-13 19:40:23

'She was in sound mind when she made this up...'

I doubt it! Who else do you know - who is of 'sound' mind - would do something like this?

Anyway, it's impossible to know anything for sure about this story.

A very damaged human being. sad

niceguy2 Tue 05-Mar-13 22:22:09

I'm actually amazed there are so many MN'ers who think she shouldn't go to prison.

If there was any evidence of mental illness then I'm sure her defence would have used that in mitigation. Having a disturbed childhood and having been in care is not a valid excuse for what she did. She had a hard life....so did many other people. Doesn't mean they are responsible for their actions.

I think everyone agrees that rape convictions are painfully lower than they should be and cracking down hard on those who falsely cry rape is a must. Because it's women like her who make it 10x harder for legitimate rape victims to get justice. Not to mention the poor bastard who's been falsely accused.
